Smart, connected, and energy-saving homes have hit the mainstream. Amazon’s acquisition of home security company Ring is just one more example of how the smart home industry is growing. When it comes to smart thermostats, consumers are interested in two things:
How can I save money and energy at the same time?
How can I control each room’s temperature in the house for maximum efficiency with my smart thermostat?
What are your options for smart thermostats that can control multiple zones?
There are several, each a bit different, but all serving the function of controlling various temperature zones using a smartphone, tablet, or other device (including the thermostat itself). Explore the following options when considering the purchase of a new smart home gadget:
Nest
Tado
Honeywell Evohome
British Gas Hive Active Heating
Honeywell Lyric T6/T6R
Netatmo
Loxone Air
Nest is among the most well-known of the smart thermostat manufacturers. Nest is a learning thermostat. It uses an algorithm to understand how you use your heating system and then sets a schedule according to the personal behavior it has observed.
Nest can detect if you’re at home or away, so it is a very efficient device. It also connects via WiFi and is IFTTT-compatible so that you can customize it, too.
Reviewers often rank Nest among the best smart thermostats on the market. You can also put wireless Nest sensors in other areas of your house to get a more accurate gauge of the temperature in the house.
Honeywell has been in the heating, energy, and thermostat production business for many decades and is a mainstay brand in the home security systems market. In fact, Honeywell developed the well-known round thermostat in the 1950s that many homes still have to this day.
Honeywell’s two best entries into the smart home and connected device market for smart thermostats are their Evohome and Lyric T6 products. These products also rank highly, but other comparable products offer similar features and let you control heating zones.
Tado
Many people prefer Tado’s cloud-based retrofit system. It uses smart sensors with radio thermostat technology to allow you to control multiple temperature zones in your home.
British Gas Hive Active Heating
In the United Kingdom, you can use the Hive app or website to control both gas heat and water options, including setting alerts for when the temperature in your home changes.
Netatmo
This device is compatible with Amazon’s Alexa, and it also claims to learn your habits in the way Nest does. It will control multiple zones with the release of its smart radiators. It also is compatible with Apple Home.
Loxone Air
Loxone Air systems can also control multiple zones using a series of radiators.
